A famous quote from Lary Page the CO-founder of Google in which he highlights the importance of
going the extra mile at work to reach success, regardless of the position that you have at a company you always can make an extra effort that leads you to the top. In reality, this is not a simple concept or
advice, it is much more than that. For successful people, it is a lifestyle.
In our modern world, we tend to see a lot of individuals wearing the victim's shoes all the time,
complaining about their situation at work, their financial situation, and well-being, and having unreal
expectations like getting promotions and extra rewards while making minimum efforts at work for which they are already being paid. With the emergence of social media, this phenomenon has become more and more prominent as it gets people to compare their lives with the lives of other people they tend to see online. Yet, most of the time, the bonus comes when extra efforts are put on the table.
Making enough effort is not the winning option, it is like walking on a treadmill while making an extra effort is the winning option. Successful employees are always a step ahead, working hard to keep their
customers satisfied, keeping up-to-date with market trends, sharing knowledge with their colleagues,
and giving an extra hand on different projects leading to a sequence of positive outcomes such as
customer satisfaction, positive feedback, developed knowledge and more opportunities. Successful
people tend to avoid complaining and constantly work hard to develop themselves.
Some employees tend to believe that their role is limited and that there is no room for added value but in reality no matter how limited is your role, there is always room for extra effort: A simple smile and extra details shared with the customer, a good presentation of your products, and working an extra hour once in a while for an important customer might seem simple steps but they really bring added value. In reality, When you make an extra effort at work, not only does the company you work for take advantage of it but you are also a big winner here as you learn and develop yourself in the process and get rewarded.
The same rule applies to other fields in life, at school, you cannot reach excellent results and build a real knowledge basis without studying extra hours at home, practicing, and even doing some research. When you go to the gym, to reach the best results you are asked to try a little bit more every day. When it comes to your personal development, you can never reach the best version of yourself if you follow the same basic routine that keeps you in your comfort zone: If you are in your comfort zone the whole time, you are slowly falling and not going anywhere in life.
However, if you try a little bit more every day you will see the difference in the long run, imagine if you dedicate 15 minutes daily for a year to learn a new language, by the end of the year you will discover that you have studied for 91 hours which truly makes the difference or imagine if you dedicate 3 hours a week for physical activity by the end of the year you will notice the benefits on your body shape as well as your health and mood. The more you give the more you receive, this is a universal rule that applies to all our life aspects. You are rewarded in different ways.
In your relationships whenever you are kind to others, you get a compensation for your kindness
maybe not from the same people with whom you were nice, but you would certainly receive great
things. Whenever you perform a charitable act by helping a needy person or feeding an animal, you are always rewarded with positive outcomes. The outcome can be tangible like financial gain, gifts, and promotions but it can also be spiritual like happiness, motivation, and positivity which are very valuable. Adapting “delivering more than expected” as a lifestyle is the best strategy you can implement in your life.
The golden rule should be to make an extra effort without thinking about the results. If you follow
this strategy, you will be amazed by the outcome and you will win in different ways: you will feel more
positive, confident, and peaceful and you will attract more success and prosperity into your life.
If you are complaining all the time, feeling afraid of new challenges, and just sitting in your place and expecting different results, you might want to re-evaluate the strategy you are adopting and maybe abandon it to adopt a new mindset that is based on doing a little extra every day which will help you get great results on the long run.
